2012. What a great year for technology. This past year we’ve seen many trends such as mobility, cloud computing, and keeping up with the Joneses (technology) so to speak. In 2013, we will continue to see these trends, but on steroids. How can your business turn these trends into strategies in 2013?
Mobility – Bring Your Own Devices (Tablets!)
This year we talked a lot about those big buzzwords “BYOD” and “mobility”. Don’t be surprised if you hear even more about mobility and BYOD in 2013. We held numerous seminars on how you can make your business more mobile, the importance of BYOD policies, and how to increase operational efficiencies with a mobile strategy. According to Forrester Research, “a full 66 percent of employees now use two or more mobile devices for work”. Amazing.
In 2013, if you haven’t already, put that BYOD policy into action. Figure out how your business can make your employees more mobile. Figure out how you can use tablets to your business’ advantage. Companies who became more mobile in 2012 have seen increases in efficiencies in ways they couldn’t have even imagined.
Keeping up with the Joneses – Staying Current with Technology
With the major release of Microsoft Windows 8, various applications, more powerful smartphones, newer tablets, and touch-screens, staying up-to-date with the latest technology for your business can be a daunting task, and not to mention, expensive!
2013 is a good year to start looking into updating, renewing, and cleaning up your business’ technology. We’ll see more and more people realizing that their company’s operating system—Windows XP, is archaic. Microsoft will no longer support XP or provide patches after April 2014. 2013 will be the year to upgrade. That 10-15 year-old phone system is a dinosaur. Should I send you message on your pager? Voice communications has progressed and the many new tools available make your work/life easier. Virtualization is here to stay. If you are still running a jungle-gym environment of servers, 2013 is the year to become virtual.
“All this new technology is coming out! Do we really need all of this?” We’ve been asked that question on more than one occasion. The answer is usually, probably not. But if you stop doing incremental upgrades, eventually you will be so far behind the curve that catching up becomes very expensive. A product’s end-of-life point means that it’s no longer supported by the manufacture, meaning more expensive repairs (if it can even be repaired), slower response times, incompatibility with new systems, and other major pains.
Cloud Computing – Hybrid Style
Cloud Computing – another huge buzzword for 2012. Many businesses now are using local computing mixed with cloud computing, which makes hybrid cloud computing. According to CompTIA’s Third Annual Trends in Cloud Computing study, “more than eight in 10 companies currently use some form of cloud solution; and more than half plan to increase cloud investments by 10 percent or more in 2012.”
